Grief
In our society we are often ushered to rush through our experiences of life and this is especially true for experinces of loss. We are rushed to get better and to move on, Rushing and distraction keep us disconnected from emotions and sensations that arise in our bodies and people faced with grief are often unsure what they are even feeling. Sadly, the culture we live in doesn’t offer the rituals humans need to deeply relate and be transformed by the moments of grief and pain we experience as part of life.
The grief framework we are offered dictates the ways we are supposed to process grief, how much time we are given for grief and even what we are allowed to grieve. Acceptable grief is typically limited to the death of loved ones and allotted very little time and space to process. In reality, grief arrives in many forms, and for many reasons. We can experience grief because all that we love we will lose. We grieve for the places we did not receive love. We can grieve for the sorrows of the world. We can experience ancestral grief and the grief of trauma. There are endless expressions of grief and ways to grieve — and grief is an essential part of our human experience. It can transform us and deepen our experiences of life and love. Grief sings to our desires for connection, love and meaning. I believe grief is necessary for the spiritual well-being of the world.
